Almost every small, faint smudge of light in this image is a galaxy of its own. The Coma Galaxy Cluster lies around 320 million light-years away and contains more than a thousand galaxies. Its centre is dominated by giant elliptical galaxies, embedded in a vast sea of smaller spiral and elliptical galaxies. Abell 1656 is not only visually impressive, but also scientifically important: the motion of its galaxies provided one of the first indications of what we now call dark matter back in the 1930s. A view far beyond our Milky Way – into one of the great structures of the cosmos.
