Sh 2-174 – Valentine Rose

Sh2-174 appears delicate and floral, which is why it is also known as the „Valentine Rose“ Nebula. It is an impressive planetary nebula located in the constellation Cepheus, approximately 1,000 light-years from Earth, with an angular size of about 20′ × 10′. What makes this nebula special is that its white dwarf (GD 561) is not positioned at the center but is noticeably offset to the right – an unusual asymmetry for planetary nebulae. The reason for this is a strong interaction with interstellar gas. The nebula is moving into a hydrogen cloud roughly 1.2° × 0.4° in size, leaving behind a distinct, ionized tail.

Sh2‑174 erscheint zart und blumig weshalb er auch als „Valentine Rose“-Nebel bekannt ist. Er ist ein beeindruckender planetarischer Nebel im Sternbild Kepheus, etwa 1000 Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt und mit einer Winkelausdehnung von rund 20’ × 10′. Was diesen Nebel besonders macht: Sein weißer Zwerg (GD 561) befindet sich nicht zentral, sondern deutlich nach rechts versetzt – eine ungewöhnliche Asymmetrie bei planetarischen Nebeln. Ursache ist eine starke Interaktion mit interstellarem Gas. Der Nebel bewegt sich in eine etwa 1,2° × 0,4° große Wasserstoffwolke und hinterlässt dabei einen markanten, ionisierten Schweif.
