NGC 7223 / IFN in Lacerta

This image reveals the faint and delicate structures of the Integrated Flux Nebula (IFN) in the constellation Lacerta (the Lizard). These extremely faint clouds of interstellar dust lie far above the galactic plane of the Milky Way. They are illuminated not by a single star, but by the combined starlight of our entire galaxy — a subtle glow that becomes visible only through very long exposures.
In the same field lies the spiral galaxy NGC 7223, about 210 million light-years away. Although it appears embedded in the dusty filaments, it is in fact a distant background galaxy shining through the galactic foreground.
It highlights the quiet interplay between faint hydrogen emission (Hα) and the soft gray-blue filaments of galactic dust — a reminder that even the most silent regions of the sky are filled with light and motion.

Dieses Bild zeigt die feinen Staub- und Gasstrukturen des sogenannten Integrated Flux Nebula (IFN) im unscheinbaren Sternbild Eidechse (Lacerta). Diese lichtschwachen Nebel bestehen aus interstellarem Staub, der weit oberhalb der galaktischen Ebene unserer Milchstraße schwebt. Er reflektiert das kombinierte Licht der gesamten Galaxis – ein zarter Schimmer, der erst durch lange Belichtungszeiten sichtbar wird.
Im Bildfeld liegt auch die Spiralgalaxie NGC 7223, rund 210 Millionen Lichtjahre entfernt. Sie scheint inmitten der Staubwolken zu liegen, befindet sich aber tatsächlich weit dahinter.
