LDN 1374 & NGC 957

Since I could not find an image of LDN 1374, I decided to give it a try myself. This field lies near the border between the constellations Perseus and Cassiopeia. On the left side of the image is the open star cluster NGC 957. The dark nebula LDN 1374 occupies the right side, where dense dust filaments absorb the background light and stand out as striking black silhouettes. In the background, diffuse hydrogen gas glows red in H-alpha emission. The colour data amount to only 4h 50m — the signal was extremely faint, so I was pleased to be able to add even subtle colour to the dark nebula.

Da ich zu LDN 1374 keine vergleichbare Aufnahme finden konnte, habe ich beschlossen, dieses Motiv anzugehen. Das Bildfeld liegt nahe der Grenze zwischen den Sternbildern Perseus und Kassiopeia. Links im Bild befindet sich der offene Sternhaufen NGC 957. Rechts dominiert der Dunkelnebel LDN 1374: Dichte Staubfilamente absorbieren das Hintergrundlicht und treten als markante, schwarze Silhouetten hervor. Im Hintergrund leuchtet zudem diffuses Wasserstoffgas in H-alpha. Die Farbinformationen wurden lediglich 4h 50min belichtet – das Signal war so schwach, dass ich froh war, dem Dunkelnebel überhaupt eine dezente Farbe geben zu können.
