IC 63 & NGC 281 – Ghost of Cassiopeia & Pacman

In the constellation Cassiopeia, this wide-field image captures two objects at very different distances:

IC 63 (“Ghost of Cassiopeia”) – A compact emission and reflection nebula illuminated by the bright star γ Cassiopeiae, surrounded by extended hydrogen gas and dust clouds. It lies at a distance of about ~550 light-years.

NGC 281 (“Pacman Nebula”) (upper right) – A large hydrogen cloud with embedded star formation (including the young cluster IC 1590). Its distance is about ~10,000 light-years. On the sky it spans roughly 30 arcminutes, making it about the same apparent size as the full Moon. The contrast is what makes this field so compelling: IC 63 is a relatively “nearby” nebular complex in the local environment of γ Cas, while NGC 281, a classic H II region, lies much farther out in the Perseus Arm.

Im Sternbild Kassiopeia zeigt diese Weitfeld-Aufnahme zwei sehr unterschiedlich weit entfernte Objekte:

IC 63 („Ghost of Cassiopeia“) – Ein kompakter Emissions- und Reflexionsnebel, der vom hellen Stern γ Cassiopeiae beleuchtet wird und von weitläufigen Wasserstoffgasen und Staubwolken umgeben wird. Er liegt in etwa ~550 Lichtjahren Entfernung.

Oben rechts im Bild NGC 281 („Pacman-Nebel“) – Eine großräumige Wasserstoffwolke mit eingebetteter Sternentstehung (u. a. im Umfeld des jungen Haufens IC 1590). Die Distanz beträgt ~10.000 Lichtjahre. Am Himmel beträgt seine Größe ca. 30 Bogenminuten und ist damit so groß wie der Vollmond.

Gerade der Kontrast macht das Feld spannend: IC 63 ist ein relativ „naher“ Nebelkomplex in der lokalen Umgebung von γ Cas, während NGC 281 als klassische H-II-Region deutlich weiter draußen im Perseus-Arm liegt.
