M 78 – Casper The Friendly Ghost

M78 (NGC 2068) is located in the Orion constellation, just above the left belt star Alnitak. With an extension of 4 light years and a distance of 1300 light years, it is about 3 times smaller in the sky than the full moon. In close neighbourhood IC434, the well-known Horse-Head Nebula can be found. M78 is one of the brightest reflection nebula in the sky and can already be seen with larger binoculars on a dark night. The red band on the right in the picture is part of Barnard’s Loop. This huge reflection Nebula fills the entire constellation Orion and will form numerous new stars over the next millions of years.

M78 (NGC 2068) befindet sich im Sternbild Orion, etwas oberhalb des linken Gürtelsterns Alnitak. Mit einer Ausdehnung von 4 Lichtjahren und einer Entfernung von 1300 Lichtjahren passt er am Himmel ca. 3-mal in den Vollmond. In direkter Nachbarschaft liegt der bekannte Pferdekopfnebel IC 434. M78 gehört zu den hellsten Reflexionsnebeln am Himmel und kann in einer dunklen Nacht bereits mit größeren Ferngläsern gesehen werden. Das rote Band rechts im Bild ist ein Teil von Barnard‘s Loop. Dieser riesige Reflexionsnebel durchzieht das gesamte Sternbild Orion und wird in den nächsten Jahrmillionen zahlreiche neue Sterne bilden.

The color information was recorded with the TS-OPTICS 76EDPH at 342mm focal length and F4.5 Luminance with Rasa 11“ V2 at 620mm focal length and F2.2
